While the Omicron variant is said to be less lethal, it can spread faster and more easily. Sufferers are less likely to need hospitalization but are nonetheless infectious. If you have a family member who has tested positive with COVID-19, but is not exhibiting severe symptoms, home care can be recommended by a doctor. What do you need to do to make your patient as comfortable as possible while keeping you and the rest of your household safe?
Provide support
The patient must isolate to prevent the spread of the disease. As a caregiver, it is up to you to help them follow their doctor's instructions for care and medicine. You could also arrange for their groceries, medicine prescriptions, any other items, or tasks they may need.
Other ways to help provide support include:
• Making sure the patient drinks a lot of fluids and gets enough rest.
• Check if over-the-counter medicines for fever help make them feel better.
Watch out for warning signs
If the patient exhibits any of the following warning signs, you must immediately seek emergency medical care.
1. Trouble breathing
2. Bluish lips or face
3. High-grade fever
4. Persistent pain or pressure in the chest
5. Cannot wake up or stay awake
These are not all of the possible symptoms. If you see any other symptom that is concerning, do not hesitate to consult a doctor.
Keep yourself safe
Exercise due caution when caring for your patient. Limit direct contact with the patient by keeping at least six feet distant from each other. Dine in separate areas from each other, and do not share personal belongings.
The patient must isolate and wear a mask if they come in contact with other members of the household. A patient should not wear a mask if they are less than two years old, have trouble breathing, or cannot remove the mask without aid.
As the caregiver, you must wear a mask and gloves before you come into contact with the patient. You must also quarantine yourself, practice preventive measures such as frequent hand washing, and constantly clean and disinfect surfaces.
Exercise all precautions you can to keep you and your loved ones safe.
